When you need it
After a rebore or a crank swap, to find out what you actually have rather than what the block was sold as. It is also the first number most of the other calculators here want — carburetor CFM, injector sizing and header diameter all start from displacement.
Advertised names are rounded
A Chevrolet 350 is 349.85 cubic inches. A Ford 302 is 301.6. A "5.7 liter" is 5.73. Manufacturers round to something that sounds good on a badge, and the aftermarket inherited the habit.
That matters if you are near a class limit, because the rulebook is written against actual displacement, not the name on the valve covers. Work it out from your finished bore before you commit to a combination.
Measure, do not assume
Use the finished bore after honing, not the nominal oversize. A block ordered at .030 over is only 4.030 if the machinist held it there. Stroke from an aftermarket crank is usually accurate, but it is worth verifying with a dial indicator on a combination that is tight on piston-to-head or rod-to-cam clearance.
